Welcome to the inaugural edition of the Clinical Legal Education Program Newsletter. As we publish this edition, we are celebrating our National Jurist Magazine ranking of 20th in the nation for clinic opportunities among American law schools. We are certainly encouraged by this recognition; and we acknowledge the contributions of our students, alumni, and community partners to our success.

Making a Difference in a Teenager's Life      

Tiffany Buckner appreciates kids - she was one of ten children in her family, after all. She felt concerned about the problems that teenagers today are facing and wanted to give back to the community by working for the juvenile clinic at NCCU. However, Buckner discovered that juveniles are sometimes hard to track down. She did not meet or even speak with one of her clients, a fifteen-year-old girl charged with larceny from a clothing store, until the day of trial!

Veterans Helping Veterans     

Robert Hogarth, a 3L at the NCCU School of Law, was given a tough assignment in 2007. He had to write a legal memorandum for a case involving a Vietnam veteran who suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder but was denied benefits from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs. The VA attributed their denial to a lack of corroborating evidence that in-service stressors had in fact caused the client's post-traumatic stress disorder. This denial by the VA Regional Office and the Board of Veterans Appeals was consistent with their longstanding practice of denying the majority of veterans' post-traumatic disorder claims for disability benefits.

The Small Business and Community Development Clinic allows students to bring their experience and expertise to small business owners located in the communities near NCCU and in the greater Triangle area.

Pro Bono Clinic Fall 2007     

The Pro Bono Clinic offers second and third year students an opportunity to develop their practical legal skills through a supervised work experience with a public interest law organization that serves low-income or disadvantaged North Carolinians.
